Qualcomm is best known for its Snapdragon processors which power some of the top Android smartphones across the world.<\/p>\n<p>Like any chip designer, Qualcomm doesn&#8217;t manufacture its own chips. Instead, it <span class=\"waslinkname\">relies on chip manufacturers<\/span> such as <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-3\"><span class=\"waslinkname\">TSMC<\/span><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>, Samsung Electronics and <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-4\"><span class=\"waslinkname\">GlobalFoundries<\/span><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have more engineers in India now than we have anywhere else in the globe,&#8221; said Soin. &#8220;We have a lot of engineers here doing end-to-end chip design.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The chip design process is &#8220;highly complex&#8221; as it requires &#8220;years of R&amp;D, hundreds of millions of dollars of investment, and thousands of engineers,&#8221; said <span class=\"waslinkname\">Semiconductor Industry Association<\/span> in a report.<\/p>\n<p>An integral part of the semiconductor manufacturing process, chip design defines the requirements for the chip&#8217;s architecture and system, as well as how individual circuits will be laid out on the chip.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"waslinkname\">Local media<\/span> reported in January that Qualcomm is expanding its Chennai operations with a new design center focusing on wireless technology.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107403605\">\n<div role=\"button\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107403605\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000337846\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.worldtechguide.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/india-is-a-key-chip-design-market-qualcomm-says-as-modi-makes-semiconductor-push.jpg\" alt=\"India is a beneficiary of some of China's problems, investment management firm says\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>The 1.77 billion rupee ($21.3 million) investment will also support Qualcomm&#8217;s commitment to the Indian government&#8217;s vision of &#8220;Make in India&#8221; and &#8220;Design in India.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We saw India 20 years ago as a great R&amp;D center of excellence and a great pool of talent. We&#8217;re seeing India as a great market, as [a] great opportunity,&#8221; Soin told CNBC&#8217;s Sri Jegarajah.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are now in discussion with a lot of semiconductor back-ends as well as manufacturing that India is trying to set up. With these units, our country will develop capabilities in chip fabrication. Advanced packaging technologies will be indigenously developed in India,&#8221; according to a government statement on Feb. 29.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"waslinkname\">India wants to become a major chip hub<\/span>&nbsp;to compete against the U.S., Taiwan and South Korea, and has been wooing foreign chip makers to set up operations in the country. Countries such as India stands to benefit as global chipmakers look to diversify operations amid geopolitical uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>To boost domestic manufacturing capabilities and exports, India has announced <span class=\"waslinkname\">billions of dollars worth of <\/span><span class=\"waslinkname\">production-linked incentives<\/span> to &#8220;attract investment&#8221; in key areas and cutting-edge technology as well as to make India &#8220;an integral part of the global value chain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>India aims to be one of the top five semiconductor manufacturers globally in the next five years, Ashwini Vaishnaw, minister of electronics and information technology, railways and communications, <span class=\"waslinkname\">told CNBC in March<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div role=\"region\" aria-labelledby=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107387935\">\n<div role=\"button\" id=\"Placeholder-ArticleBody-Video-107387935\" class=\"PlaceHolder-wrapper\" data-vilynx-id=\"7000334445\" data-test=\"VideoPlaceHolder\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-videoEmbed\" id=\"InlineVideo-0\" data-test=\"InlineVideo\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"InlineVideo-inlineThumbnailContainer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.worldtechguide.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/india-is-a-key-chip-design-market-qualcomm-says-as-modi-makes-semiconductor-push-1.jpg\" alt=\"India expects to be among 'top five semiconductor nations' in next five years: Minister\"><span class=\"InlineVideo-videoButton\"><\/span><span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p>&#8220;What we have seen is \u2013 for example, the PLI benefits \u2013 it certainly has brought manufacturing of more and more smartphones into India,&#8221; said Soin.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we have seen good incentives on IT, telecom and telecom equipment that&#8217;s manufacturing here. We are seeing some discussions around the design elements. So we&#8217;re hoping that more and more things, some elements of our products that use our technology, get designed in India,&#8221; said Soin.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-12\"><span class=\"waslinkname\">Apple<\/span><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\" aria-label=\"Add To Watchlist\" data-testid=\"dropdown-btn\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-addWatchListFromTag\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> is one of the companies that has diversified some of its manufacturing operations to India amid U.S.-China geopolitical tensions.
