The Twitter CEO said that he wants to \u201ccreate a third option\u201d for a company that could challenge OpenAI and Google.<\/p>\n<p>In <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>an interview<\/ins><\/span> with <em>Fox News<\/em>, Musk said that he\u2019s thinking of calling the venture \u201cTruthGPT\u201d and that the goal would be to create a \u201cmaximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe\u201d and that \u201chopefully does more good than harm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Musk acknowledged that he would be starting with a significant disadvantage to his rivals as he\u2019s \u201cstarting late.\u201d And, as is often the case, it\u2019s unclear how serious or far along his plans actually are. But speculation about Musk\u2019s AI ambitions has been mounting as he recently filed paperwork for a business called <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>X.AI Corp<\/ins><\/span>. He also reportedly bought thousands <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>of GPUs<\/ins><\/span> and hired researchers from DeepMind for an unknown Twitter AI project. It\u2019s unclear if the two initiatives are related. Musk has been known<span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins> to move<\/ins><\/span> employees across his companies.<\/p>\n<p>Musk said his motivation stemmed from concerns about the direction of AI and the threat it could pose to humanity. Notably, he was an early backer of OpenAI, which he helped start <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>in 2015<\/ins><\/span>. But Musk distanced himself from the organization after a reported <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>disagreement<\/ins><\/span> with Sam Altman about who would run the organization. More recently, he has <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>criticized<\/ins><\/span> OpenAI for spinning off a for-profit business and working with Microsoft.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s unclear how Musk\u2019s AI plans could affect Twitter, he did tease one upcoming feature for the service. He said Twitter was working on a feature that would allow users to optionally encrypt their direct messages, and that it\u2019s \u201chopefully coming out later month, but no later than next month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Encrypted direct messaging has been rumored <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>for years<\/ins><\/span> and Musk, a <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>known fan<\/ins><\/span> of encrypted messaging apps, has previously <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>said<\/ins><\/span> that Twitter should offer Signal-style encryption. \u201cIf you are in a conversation you think is sensitive, you can just toggle encryption on and then no one at Twitter can see what you\u2019re talking about,\u201d Musk explained.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elon Musk\u2019s plans for his own AI company are starting to come into focus.
