The head of the company\u2019s gaming division shared the timeline in a <span class=\"waslinkname\"><em><ins>Financial Times<\/ins><\/em><\/span> interview published on Monday, noting the plan is dependent on regulators approving Microsoft\u2019s <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>$68.7 billion acquisition<\/ins><\/span> of Activision Blizzard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to be in a position to offer Xbox and content from both us and our third-party partners across any screen where somebody would want to play,\u201d Spencer told the outlet. \u201cToday, we can\u2019t do that on mobile devices but we want to build towards a world that we think will be coming where those devices are opened up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"end-legacy-contents\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Microsoft first revealed it was working on an Xbox store for mobile devices in <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>regulatory documents<\/ins><\/span> the company filed with the UK\u2019s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) last year. At the time, the tech giant didn\u2019t provide a timeline for the plan, noting only its proposed merger with Activision Blizzard would play a critical role. Spencer was more direct on Monday. \u201cThe Digital Markets Act that\u2019s coming \u2014 those are the kinds of things that we are planning for,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it\u2019s a huge opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>Digital Markets Acts<\/ins><\/span> (DMA), major platforms the European Union designates as \u201cgatekeepers\u201d will be required to open their devices to competing app stores. Last fall, a <span class=\"waslinkname\"><em><ins>Bloomberg <\/ins><\/em><ins>report<\/ins><\/span> said<em>&nbsp;<\/em>Apple was already at work preparing to make iOS compliant with the legislation ahead of its March 2024 deadline. The EU will allow companies it labels as gatekeepers to appeal the designation, a carveout that could delay enforcement of the law. Additionally, with challenges from the <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>Federal Trade Commission<\/ins><\/span> and <span class=\"waslinkname\"><ins>CMA<\/ins><\/span>, there\u2019s no guarantee Microsoft\u2019s acquisition of Activision Blizzard will close before the new rules apply to Apple and Google, a fact Spencer seemed to acknowledge when interviewed by the <em>Financial Times<\/em>.
